Photo Tiling Tutorial is Now Available

Have you seen any layouts using the photo tiling feature in My Memories Suite?  That is one of my favorite features added in version 4.  If you love the look too, I’ve created a tutorial to show you how to use photo tiling in your layouts.  You can find the tutorial here and I’ve included another example below using this feature.

This example is very similar to one of the layouts in the tutorial but for this layout I used the original photo for the entire background.  I also used the photo effect feature to change it to black & white.

Setting Preferences

Setting preferences is a time saving feature available in both My Memories Suite and Memory Mixer scrapbooking software.  Do you find yourself using the same fonts, shadows or other features time and time again?  Did you know you can set your preferences to apply throughout an entire album?  Setting preferences will save you time and still give you freedom to tweak things when you want. To set preferences choose Edit> Preferences.

Edit PreferencesYou can set your preferred font for the album you are working on and each album can have the same or different preferences.  As you can see below, you can set the preferred font type & size, bold, italics, underline, alignment and color.

Font PreferencesYou can also change the shadows for each element so your photos, shapes, embellishments and text shadows are all uniform.  Although I set a default for my embellishments I tweak them based on their “thickness”.  Remember with digital scrapping you need to consider how thick an item would be if you were paper scrapping.  If I’m using an embellishment, such as a thick flower, that would stand off the paper more than other embellies I will decrease the opacity and increase the blur.  Thinner items would have a darker, sharper shadow (higher opacity with less blur).  I don’t add a shadow to text that would appear hand written so I wouldn’t set a shadow for text.  If I’m using text as a title that would traditionally be raised, I’ll add a shadow to it.

Shadow PreferenceIf you use the grid or snap to grid feature you can also set these preferences as well.  You can display the grid based on pixels, inches or millimeters.

Grid PreferencesIn addition, you can set the following items as desired.  Captions, if checked, will enable auto caption which will display the name of the photo file below the photo.  Photo Cache uses caching technology to store thumbnails and make loading quicker.  You can also show or hide warning messages.  These messages differ in each program.

I think setting your preferences is definitely worth the effort and will make your album uniform while allowing you to tweak the settings as desired.

What About Close-Ups?

What about Close-ups?  I love them!  Digital cameras, and even cell phone cameras, have come a long way since their inception.  These fantastic cameras make it easy to snap tons of photos.  The quality has improved so much you can zoom in on those great shots to get fantastic close-ups.

When you use a very large close-up in your layout you may not need a lot of embellishments but by strategically placing them you can enhance the overall look.

In the example below, I used a picture I took today of our Mini-Schnauzer Sweetie.  She loves to hunt grasshoppers!  I was hoping to get several in a series of hunting shots but one got away and she was off to catch it.  But I love this shot!  The playful feel & muted, minimal embellishments enhance the pic while leaving room for the title “Hunting Grasshoppers”.  So keep going for that great shot, enlarge and crop it.  Close-ups are winners every time!

Why Do You Scrapbook?

Why do you scrapbook?  A designer recently posted this question on her Facebook page.  I was never a big paper scrapper.  Actually I’ve only completed one paper scrapbook and I have an unfinished one but then I found digital scrapping and I’ve been hooked ever since.

I found digital scrapping out of necessity.  I wanted to make a “party favor” of sorts for all the family members that attended our first family reunion without spending a lot of money.  I had thought about making a Power Point presentation but that really wasn’t what I was looking for and making a paper scrapbook for everyone was just too expensive.  After doing some online research I found MyMemories Suite scrapbooking software.  It was perfect and so easy, there was a very small learning curve.

I was able to put together a lovely memory “book” for everyone which I set to music and burned to DVD.  It was really a family history of sorts.  The idea for a family reunion came about after my brother’s funeral.  Our family is spread across two states and the only time we’d all get together was for funerals!  The older generation were already passing, in the previous decade we’d lost my father and my older brother.

My son, niece and two nephews really worked at making all the plans for a reunion.  The cousins, as we call them, have really made an effort to keep in contact and remain close even though they’re separated by many miles.  So the DVD was much more than a reunion memory, it was a family heritage keepsake.  I collected old photos and tried to show highlights of ours lives as we grew up and had families of our own and they had families of their own too.  It brought back lovely memories and made everyone laugh and cry.

In the process, I became hooked on digital scrapping and found a community of people that share my love for scrapping.  We love our families and want to pass on some of our cherished memories.  We are our families memory keepers.

What about you?  Why do you scrapbook?

What Makes a Good Album Cover?

What makes a good album cover for the scrapbook you’re making of your honeymoon or family vacation?  I think using one of the photos from your trip works perfectly.  You can add a smaller photo of the happy couple or family, depending on the occasion, to further personalize the album.  If you’re using MyMemories Suite it’s easy to make a title using the same photo that you used for the background.  There is no need for any additional embellishments.   In the end you’ll have a cover that looks professionally designed.

If you’d like to find out how to make an album cover like this check out this short tutorial.

My Perfect Day!

If you had to describe your “Perfect Day” what would it look like?  For me nothing could be better than spending time with my husband, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.  In a few short months I’ll be able to add grandson to that list, yay.  We don’t live in close proximity so when we are able to get together I am perfectly happy just to spend time together.  If I was able to move closer to them I could have a whole bunch of perfect days.  I’d love to be able to be there for every day activities like dance recitals, swimming lessons, school programs, field trips and soon feeding, burping and changing the baby.  Hey a girl can dream!

I’ve been trying to persuade Paw Paw to  sell our business and retire.  Then I’d be able to be the mother and grandmother I’ve always wanted to be.  Here is a layout of my last perfect day.  It’s been over six months and we overdue a visit.  Hopefully that’ll happen later this month.
